what is the mineral buffet?
Our Mineral Buffet system includes 20 minerals, trace elements, and vitamin blends that are specially formulated to give livestock exactly what they need, on an individual level.
Rather than offering a one-size-"fits"-all mineral block, our Mineral Buffet system allows each animal to pick and choose which minerals they need, when they need it, and in what quantity. You'll be surprised to find that animals have an incredible understanding of what their body needs and they will only consume as much as they need.
Think it sounds crazy? Well, next time you're craving a banana just remember that your body is asking you for potassium. Suddenly have a hankering for some dark chocolate? Listen to your body - it's asking for magnesium. Chewing ice? Iron. Fatty foods? Calcium.
You see, we have the innate ability to use a mineral buffet system as well, but we prefer our processed junk food and all-you-can-eat buffets instead!
We have been using this system with our own livestock long enough to know that it works. We believe so strongly in this method that we decided to offer it to other farmers and homesteaders as well. We wouldn't be selling the minerals if we didn't believe in them.
how much will my animals go through?
If we could answer that for you then we'd probably be billionaires or prophets. The truth is, it will vary wildly from flock to flock, animal to animal.
Our recommendation is to start with one of our Starter Packs and pay close attention to which minerals your herd is lapping up fastest. You may find that switching pastures or hay suppliers will drastically change which minerals they're seeking most.
In our experience you will go through a lot more minerals than you expect in the first few months as the livestock are filling in mineral gaps they didn't know they had. As their bodies adjust they will slow down on their consumption (until you change their feed again or they go through pregnancy).
Can my sheep really have copper?
Here's the honest truth: Yes, sheep can have copper. Copper is an essential microelement for animals, but like many things, it can be toxic in excess.
Here's the bottom line: Only you can decide what it best for your flock. Do your research, trust your own judgment.

how should i set up my mineral buffet?
There are countless ways to set up your buffet! It comes down to what will work best for you and your livestock.
Do you want it mounted on a wall in your barn?
Or on wheels to move between pastures?
Do you need to keep others animals out of it?
Here's what works for us:
We built a mobile cart that can be wheeled between pastures and has storage space in the center for our mineral bags. We mounted hanging feeders from our favorite Farm & Garden store to the outside, added a roof, and made some wheel axles out of threaded rod and upcycled tires.
It doesn't have to be fancy but it does have to be functional! Around here we call that "good enough!"
What if I need more than 8 pounds?
Good news - larger quantities are available upon request! Just send us an email at hello@bearcreekhomestead.com and we can put together a larger order for you.
Note: Our larger orders typically come in 25 pound bags.
what types of livestock can benefit from the mineral buffet?
These minerals are intended for Cattle, Dairy Livestock, Goats, & Sheep.
Truthfully, any animal that needs minerals can use this - just use your judgment.
Even our Livestock Guardian Dogs will take only what they need when they need it.
Where do you get your minerals from?
Our mineral products are manufactured by Free Choice Enterprises in Lancaster, WI. We use all of their minerals with our own flock so we feel very confident offering their products to you!

We try to get all orders out the door in 3-5 business days, but you know how farm life can be: and our animals always take precedence.

Are any purchases final sale?
We are unable to accept returns on certain items. Opened minerals and all lip balm are final sale for safety reasons.

Our farm stand products are made by us, our animals, and some local-to-us vendors. Any farm stand vendor that isn't us will be clearly marked in the product description.
